Old Fashioned

In a world of muddled mint and blended fruit, sometimes I lose sight of the true cocktail spirit. Not that I don’t partake, or even enjoy such techniques. In fact, I have a huge soft spot for fancy farmer’s market cocktails. Yet, there’s something special about a simple glass of spirit, sugar, water, and bitters. The Old Fashioned has a timeless quality that suits just about any occasion.

Old Fashioned

The classic Old Fashioned Cocktail recipe
Servings: 1 cocktail

INGREDIENTS

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Start by placing the sugar cube in the bottom of your mixing glass, then top sugar with bitters and seltzer. Muddle the sugar to break down the cube and to combine well with the other ingredients.
  2. Next, add the rye and stir to combine. Once the ingredients are all thoroughly mixed, fill your mixing glass with ice and stir for 30 seconds.
  3. Strain into an old fashioned glass over one large cube of ice.
  4. Garnish with a large peel of lemon.

OMG! There are so many “drinks of the moment!” But you can’t beat a classic! When I attended bartending school to support my kids and my self back in the 70’s (yep I’m aged!) this was one of the best! Still is! Thanks for reminding me of one of the greats! In the words of the one of the best – “Here’s looking at you kid!”:

Hehe, thank you Sue!! No matter what anyone says, nothing beats an old fashioned. I’m happy you got my back on this one 🙂

Ohhhh yeah! My drink of choice. Ever since a bartender made me one at the basement bar of the Boundary Hotel in London. Used Rowan’s Creek bourbon and watched him artfully mix it for a good 10 min. Hunted down a bottle as soon as I got home and have been making them since.

Looks like a nice way to feature a good rye! I’ve never tried an old fashioned because I’ve never known really what it is. Appreciate the education and will try one soon!

I used to associate the Old Fashioned cocktail with little old ladies in fancy hotel bars, but this looks simply incredible. The photography is beautiful and I may have to imbibe in one of these over the weekend.
