Yuzu Sidecar + Umami Mart Giveaway

*** CONTEST CLOSED, CONGRATULATIONS SONIA LUCYGA! ***

I’m not exactly sure why, but the sidecar is always the first cocktail that pops into my brain. I think it may have been one of the first cocktails recipes I ever memorized back when I was getting started behind the bar. Which is weird considering I was working at a Spanish tapas restaurant, and sidecars were nowhere to be found on the menu. Regardless, the sidecar remains one of the all-time classics; the perfect balance of tart and sweet. Strangely I’ve never made one for the blog. So today, in honor of our special giveaway I’m finally shaking up a sidecar.

That’s right, we’re giving away this stunning Goldfinger bar set from Umami Mart!! This is the real flippin’ deal – a full set of gold-plated barware from Japan. To enter, simply (1) leave a comment on this post letting us know what cocktail you’d make with these classy new tools (2) like Umami Mart on Facebook OR follow on Instagram. A winner will be randomly chosen on December 9, 2014. (Limited to US & Canada residents only. Winner will be contacted by email. Good luck!!!)

Yuzu Sidecar | HonestlyYUM

The sidecar is definitely a simple drink to learn, having only three ingredients: cognac, Cointreau, and lemon. In fact, it’s thought by many to be the precursor to the margarita.

Yuzu Sidecar | HonestlyYUM

The Goldfinger set includes: a gold-plated cobbler shaker, a gold-plated jigger, two coupe glasses, a Queen Elizabeth swizzle stick, and two gold circle cocktail pins.

Yuzu Sidecar | HonestlyYUM

You might have noticed that I adapted the classic sidecar recipe, replacing the lemon with yuzu. Yuzu is a tart citrus native to East Asia and commonly found in Japanese and Korean cuisine.

Yuzu Sidecar | HonestlyYUM

They aren’t quite as juicy as a common lemon, but check out those enormous seeds!!

Yuzu Sidecar | HonestlyYUM

Start by prepping your glass. Rub a freshly cut yuzu around the rim of your coupe glass. Dip the rim of the glass into some sugar.

Yuzu Sidecar | HonestlyYUM

Next, add the cognac, Cointeau, and yuzu juice to your cobbler shaker. Fill with ice and shake shake shake for 10 seconds!

Yuzu Sidecar | HonestlyYUM

Strain into your sugar-rimmed coupe glass.

If you’d like, use a cocktail pin to garnish with a lovely twist of yuzu.

And you’re ready to drink.

I hope you enjoy this classic cocktail!

Sidecar has been my drink of choice lately… I’d have to say a classic sidecar.

I would try a Salty Dog! A restaurant by me makes a fabulous version, and I’d love the set to try on my own! Thanks for the giveaway!

Gorgeous cocktail, love that refreshing burst of citrus!

I would love to shake up a Hemingway Daiquiri with this super stunning set!

I would happily concoct a batch of Vodka Gimlets for my pals with this gorgeous set! And of course, one or more of your special libations. Cheers!

Gold barware calls for a classic cocktail; old fashioneds for everyone!

I’m with you on the sidecars! Hubs & I love them..have even had to give the recipe to bartenders because they weren’t familiar.. Tsk!

I’d try to create one of my fave tequila cocktails, the P&T, from a local restaurant in Alameda 🙂

Followed on insta, too! Thanks

Ugh it’s so hard to think of one but I’d probably just have to go with a Dark and Stormy 🙂

Also liked on instagram!

Since it’s so terribly wintery here right now I think I’d try your cardamom moscow mule. (Also, that is a stunning bar set! And I’ve liked you on FB)

What a cool contest! I think the first drink I would make would be a Greyhound – I am a huge fan of grapfruits! I liked on FB and following on IG =)

I love the coupe glasses. I will be on the lookout for yuzu at the farmer’s market.

That looks amazing! The cocktail looks delicious, and the Goldfinger bar set is stunning.

I would make a French Ginger Martini:
-Vodka
-Domaine de canton
-Grand Marnier
-Orange peel and ginger, to garnish

What an incredibly delicious drink! I would definitely go with a pomegranate martini for the holidays. You can’t go wrong with anything pomegranate this time of year!!

I would make a Yuzu Sidecar of course! Then I would follow it with several holiday drinks where egg nog must be included. Beautiful pictures!

I would give the set to my sister and she would make me my favourite cockatil – bourbon sours!

Honestly, the only cocktails I make are what I learn from this site (I’ve been hooked since the Rose Fizz). This would look fabulous with the bar cart I learned to make from you guys!

After someone made me a Pear Brandy Sidecar one New Year’s Eve, I’ve been hooked on the classic Sidecar. I’m so glad classic cocktails are back in style and the Sidecar would definitely be the first cocktail I made with this set. Cheers!

hmmmmm……so many drinks, so little time. I think I’d start with a Cosmopolitan.

I would make a French Gimlet with this beautiful set, and if you’re ever out in Nashville, I’ll invite you over and whip one up.

well the answer is quite simple really … I’d use this exquisite set to try and emulate/create all the amazing drinks I see on Honestly Yum. I def would be using it for daiquiris, margaritas, martinis, all the various citrus concoctions I enjoy messing around with, whenever I deviate from traditional old fashioneds so like old fashioned based stuff, I really enjoy Aperol and having been using it more and more outside of a straight up spritz so the measuring utensil would be clutch as my eyeballing is draining my bottles maybe too rapidly lol, it’d come in handy with the whiskey sours and moscow mules, etc … possibilities are endless. Japanese stuff is the way to go!

I would love to make a Clover Club with yuzu or Tahitian Pumello in place of the lemon! Love the set!

i would love to make a classic gin martini with this beautiful set!

An American Trilogy!

1 part Rye Whiskey
1 part Apple Brandy
Orange Bitter
1 Sugar Cube

Love this! I would make my all time favorite cocktail, a blood and sand.

Because this barware set is Japanese I think I would have to go with a Japanese Cocktail. Three simple ingredients, 2oz Cognac, 1/2 oz Orgeat, and 3 dashes of Angostura bitters. I know this is often stirred, but I would shake it and make sure it was nice and frothy. I love this blog and have been inspired by it many times when writing my own. Thanks for sharing and thanks to Umami Mart for their generosity. If I win, you can bet this beautiful set will be featured in my next blog post!

My husband would make his favorite Manhattan recipe and I’d whip up a sidecar with my neighbor’s meyer lemons.

I’d kick things off with this sidecar recipe, then I’m inspired to try something with lemongrass or ginger…

Sidecars are one of my favorite cocktails, though the old fashioned comes as a close second. I love the addition of yuzu in here!

I’d break out the gold plated cocktail tools for Wild Turkey Rye, cause it’s liquid GOLD. Add some cranberry-orange syrup, allspice dram, and lemon juice for the holidays in a glass.

Gorgeous pictures, Todd! I love a good sidecar. If I had such sassy barware – and a yuzu – I would make a Tokyomilk (via Wide Eyed Legless and New_Wild) and swap out the grapefruit for yuzu! The recipe also calls for frothing up an egg white with shochu and sake so at least I’d have something to look at while using that lovely shaker. Thanks Honestly Yum & Umami Mart!

As many have said, gorgeous classic pieces deserve a gorgeous classic – a French 75, but maybe a Hiney Badger (with gin and St. Germaine) to follow.

That’s the most photogenic drink I’ve ever seen! I make yuzu aioli– I’ll have to incorporate it into cocktails as well.

The bar ware from Umami Mart is so clean and beautiful. I just found a vintage mirrored tea cart and they’d pair so well together 😉 I’d make a cinnamon pear fizz! And feel fancy.

Isn’t it obvious….all cocktails. I love all of mine drinks nicely shaken where ice skates on top just briefly. However my go to libation over this past summer has been the Bees Knees with home grown lavender and my very own honey. It is enjoyable to have friends over and try out some craft cocktails. I know my ex-barternder friends would be very impressed with this barware.

Oh, I love Umami Mart! I took a class through them to learn how to make umeshu, so I’d have to say some sort of plum wine concoction or a gin + ginger shrub + soda cocktail.

I love a good sidecar and I especially love anything with Yuzu. I would have to make this cocktail with the bar set. Also, have you tried using bottled yuzu juice? Since they have such a short season (and are especially hard to find here in Colorado) yuzu juice in a bottle is the best. I fell in love with it in Japan and often dream about that signature fragrance…yum!

My new winter staple, a Brandy Alexander, would look irresistible emerging from that stunning shaker!

I would make a ginger flavored sidecar. I think the smell and taste of fresh ginger goes so well with the holiday season!!

INGREDIENTS

Sugar
1 orange slice
2 1/4-inch-thick slices peeled fresh ginger
2 one-inch strips of orange peel
2 ounces brandy
1 ounce Cointreau or Grand Marnier
2 tablespoons lemon juice
2 teaspoons maple syrup, preferably grade B

Dream set! I would try the spiced pomegranate cocktail – yum! Liked on Facebook.

Seriously gorgeous photos. Wow! Some of my favorites that I’ve seen on this site 🙂 I know this sounds boring, but I’d definitely make a margarita with the barware! It’s my go-to…whether it’s lime on the rocks, or has a little muddled jalapeno, or even a bit of strawberry…it’s margaritas all the way!

What a lovely bar set. Japanese made products are always of higher quality and beauty.
I would make a lychee martini with locally sourced lychee, of course! Cheers!!!
Liked in Instagram. ❤️

Liked on instagram. The first drink I would make be a whiskey sour.

I’ve never made a sidecar, so I’d make that first! I follow you on IG 🙂

Greyhound! Grapefruit and gin (or even bourbon) are so tasty in the winter.

Wow, these are a stunner! I am all about a traditional gin martini (Hendricks) with blue cheese stuffed olives. But my boyfriend would want to make a Manhattan!

I would be making so many cocktails every weekend, especially gin ones since it’s my favorite. Right now I can’t think of a specific one but maybe a lavender citrus gin one!!

I would totally try this drink. always looking for a new “golden” cocktail for my Oscar party!

HOLY YESSSS. Obsessed with Umami Mart and can never turn down a good cocktail. I’m all about this gorgeous Yuzu Sidecar but my go to drink right now is an Ume Sour!!

I would make a port of call with macerated cranberries, ruby red port, cinnamon simple syrup, fresh lemon juice and gin! Yum! Yum yum!

I’d try making the Yuzu Sidecar featured in this article. Sounds delicious and I just happen to have yuzu juice on hand!

A Golden Manhattan, with J&B instead of bourbon and Tuaca instead of sweet vermouth.

Anything with whiskey! Maybe a Manhattan, a whiskey sour, an old fashioned, or a Washington apple! I feel like any drink would taste and look great with this set.

What beautiful pictures!! I would go with my Lemon Gingerini!!

I’d make the perfect Old Fashioned for my boyfriend and I. It’s become our go-to cocktail to warm up on a cold night, with a blanket and a good movie! XO

Ahh I love this barware and it would look perfect in my new home on my new white and gold bar cart!
I would probably make a classic French 75 with these, since that’s my fave!

I would make an Elderbubble Martini– St Germain, Raspberry Stoli, topped with champagne. Yummmm!!

Love love love this set! I would probably make a gimlet, I recently fell in love with how refreshing and light they are! xo

This cocktail sounds yummy! I love this gold barware and would make coquito (Puerto Rican eggnog with rum) with a toasted coconut rum. I came across the recipe a few weeks ago and plan on making it for one of my holiday Boozy Friday posts in the next few weeks, which means I must win!

I like to work with ingredients that are in season.
I think a Grapefruit and Rosemary Honey cocktail would be perfect!

I will shake up whatever my customers order. Mainly Margaritas!
It will be great to add this gorgeous barware to our small bar, inform customers about this fine product, and how we won it through you!

As usual the barware is impeccable. I would christen it with a vodka martini. So shaken, and not stirred.

That’s an absolutely stunning bar set and I’d be proud to win that. Personally, I have a craving for a Brandy Crusta right now. It would be lovely in one of those sugar-rimmed coupe and a wide coin of orange peel.

Hands down, Maple-Bourbon Cider! (The best fall cocktail in a gold shaker? Amazing!)

I would make the honestly yum perfect margarita because it’s my go to drink! This umami mart bar ware is literally all that my bar cart is missing. I love it!

My husband’s been obsessed with yuzu ever since our honeymoon to Japan, so I’d probably make something with yuzu bitters and ginger!

How beautiful!!! Not to steal your idea or anything, but I would make a sidecar! 😉

I’d make one of my favorite Honestly Yum cocktails, the Lavender Bee’s Knees! Honey, lavender and golden bar ware? Yes, please!

I would invent something yummy. Vodka, persimmon, rosemary maybe…with some rosewater simple syrup. I’m going to play with that with or without the gorgeous barware!

I’d shake up a Mukilteo Rum:
3 oz rum
1 ½ oz meyer lemon juice, freshly squeezed
1 ½ oz orange juice, freshly squeezed
1 tsp. Pretty Bird Bitters (homemade)
½ to 1 tsp. simple syrup
Star anise garnish

I would treat myself to a Vesper with St.George’s Terroir and perhaps a rosemary reduction/bitter/syrup.

This set is gorgeous! I’d make rye manhattans, among other things 🙂

Gorgeous! I would make a Bees Knees. Gin, simple syrup, agave nectar, and lemon juice! Liked on Facebook and Instagram @baileyac33.

I would make this one, of course! Looks refreshing and delicious. I already like those pages on IG and FB, too. 😉

I’d most probably make an Aviation with some offbeat type of bitters.

I was just scrolling quickly through instagram when I saw this gorgeous set!wow! I’d have to say that with something this special, I would first make something new. I’d go with an “old cuban”… thennn I would have to make mojitos! Definitely some mojitos.

I’d keep it classic and make one of my all time favorites: A gin martini, made with St. George Terroir (best gin ever), and garnished with a lemon twist, to keep it bright and refreshing, while still being able to taste the aromatics in the Terroir Gin.

I’ve been drooling over that gold shaker in your store for ever. Give it to me! I’ll make a taquilla sunrise because I’m classy.

Gin and Tonic: Junipero Gin, Fresh Lime, Fever-tree tonic, St. Germain and a giant ice cube.

I’d made my custom wedding cocktail! Champagne with st Germaine and a splash of fresh squeezed grapefruit juice, garnished with a grapefruit twist. Looks good tastes even better!

I’ll be making Palomas! The pink and gold will look so amazing I might just drink straight from the shaker.

my drink of the winter is white russians – especially eggnog white russians right before Christmas! I’d definitely use this barware to make me some of those and all my friends!

This set is very sexy. I will be making a Chocolate Martini as soon as it arrives on my doorstep.

I’d use this sassy set to make some tasty greyhounds this citrus season!

Definitely a Papa Roble. I want to get my bar cart started and this would be the perfect way!!!

Love the sidecar! Actually one of my favorite drinks, and would love to try the yuzu twist. I would also love to make a French 75. Cheers!

What a great giveaway!! Just started infusing liquors and would love this set to experiment with– but a Pisco Sour would be perfect in these glasses.

I would make a classic old fashioned first, but anything is possible with this beautiful set!

I love almost any drink with gin. A grapefruit, gin and Rosemary would be what Id put in those beautiful glasses!

I would love to first try a sidecar – but I’d have to use lemon, since I live in a very remote area and am unable to obtain yuzu easily. I’d also love to make some extra dirty martinis, or perhaps a Manhattan or two. Thanks for a spectacular giveaway.

How can I not make a side car with lemon. Yuzu are out of season, obviously, in North America.

Sidecars were introduced to me at my very first business ‘dinner’. Hubby and I are currently enjoying Maple Leaf Cocktails with sprigs of thyme.

I think I would have to make this yuzu sidecar! I’ve never had a sidecar before but it sounds delicious.

Cosmo’s! I’d feel very Carrie Bradshaw making cosmos’s out of Gold Barware !

A passion fruit saikirinha (like a caipirinha but with sake) !

What wouldn’t I make?? To start i think it would have to be an old fashioned.

I would make a Royal BumudaYacht Club cocktail. That beautiful gold barware and an Hawaiin shirt would help me to forget that I live in Michigan and it’s 20 degrees outside.

With my new barware I will be making this drink I found on your site: Pumpkin Pie Bourbon!
Also, Liked Umami Mart on FB!

What a gorgeous bar set! I can’t drink at the moment since I’m “with child,” but I would totally use this to whip up a cocktail for my husband (so 1950’s of me, right?) I personally love a pisco sour, but he’s partial to a gin martini, so I guess I’d have to opt for that. 🙂

LOVE this bar set and would make so many sidecars with it! Sidecar has been my cocktail of choice for about 10 years and I just never get sick of it… I have loved trying different variations over the years. These glasses are gorgeous and perfect for a 5:00 sidecar!

Love the gold. I would make a white cosmo with some candied cranberries.

Filthy martini — that barware set definitely calls for something classic & timeless. Martini it is.

You picked the perfect drink to show off that beautiful shaker, and I’m a citrus fanatic so I have to track some some yuzus 🙂

I would make my husband’s nightly Manhattan with it and really impress him!

Ahhhh! Too many choices, I’d definitely make one of your beautiful cocktails, that is for sure! Probably this one–since I am a citrus/yuzu fanatic! 🙂
