Rob Roy in a Flask

Just because you’re out camping, doesn’t mean you have to skip happy hour! One trick I like to use is to fill my flask with not just my favorite spirit, but a premixed cocktail. A couple things to keep in mind: it’s best to choose a cocktail that is completely spiritous, as in, it contains no juices, purees or other perishable non-alcoholic ingredients (sorry margaritas). Here I made the classic Rob Roy cocktail. Trust me, from now on you’ll be one happy camper!!

This recipe is enough to fill an 8 oz flask, or the equivalent of two cocktails.

You’ll want to prep your cocktail in advance, before venturing into the great outdoors. Combine the scotch, vermouth, water, and bitters in a mixing glass and stir without ice to combine. Water is added to account for some of the dilution normally achieved from stirring over ice.

Of course, this can also be done at your campsite. However, if you’d like to leave all bottles and glassware at home, do yourself a favor and prepare in advance.

Funnel the cocktail into your flask. That’s all there is to it! Your cocktail is ready to drink.

Since you’ve already added water, there’s no need for any further stirring. If possible, keep the flask in a nice cool place before drinking.

Sip straight from the flask or serve over a few pieces of ice if you require a bit more refreshment.

My wife and I hiked to the Sperry Chalet the week before the lodge was burned in a forest fire. We carried in two cocktail glasses and a 45oz Hydroflask filled with a mix of Out West Double Rye, Antica Vermouth, and bitters. We even brought some Luxardo cherries. Cocktails on the glacier, and a trip we will never forget.

James!! This story melts my heart! I’m so sorry to hear about the lodge…an unforgettable trip in so many ways. Indeed, that sounds like the perfect glacier cocktail. Cheers to you my friend. Thanks for stopping by.

This is great, but I also suggest the Woodward Cocktail per New York Bartender’s guide:

4 parts Scotch
1 part DRY vermouth
1 part grapefruit juice

Stir and serve like a martini (not olive but a twist works)

Any recipe that starts with “4 parts Scotch” is a winner in my book 😉

Hi, Supal,
we are heading to Scotland for a brief vacation, and want to bring back some good Sctoch that we can not find here in the States…any recommendations?

I do this exact same thing! LOVE the pics (as usual) and styling. Beautiful and evocative.

I LOVE flask cocktails! Usually we do Manhattans in them but around the house we also enjoy a Rob Roy from time to time. And are we officially moving into Fall drink posts? These photos make me want a wool blanket and a pot of beans with that flask.

This is my kinda camping!!! I didn’t think you could top that booze-filled ice sphere, but this is officially the coolest cocktail post, ever. I love a vermouth/whiskey cocktail and can’t wait to try this one. If only I had a nifty plaid flask to drink it from. (Ps. I’m forever indebted to you for introducing me to the Pimm’s cup. My latest obsession is the one at Hog Island in the Ferry Building, topped with bay laurel leaves and sipped alongside a dozen sweetwaters. Mmm…)

I used to live in Scotland and definitely developed a taste for single malts and blended scotches, but never really tried them in cocktail form. Going to attempt this. How perfect is this for a fall evening outdoors drink?! x

Awesome Supal! Yes, it’s great if you’re looking for something just slightly different from a Manhattan.
