Just because you’re out camping, doesn’t mean you have to skip happy hour! One trick I like to use is to fill my flask with not just my favorite spirit, but a premixed cocktail. A couple things to keep in mind: it’s best to choose a cocktail that is completely spiritous, as in, it contains no juices, purees or other perishable non-alcoholic ingredients (sorry margaritas). Here I made the classic Rob Roy cocktail. Trust me, from now on you’ll be one happy camper!!

This recipe is enough to fill an 8 oz flask, or the equivalent of two cocktails.

You’ll want to prep your cocktail in advance, before venturing into the great outdoors. Combine the scotch, vermouth, water, and bitters in a mixing glass and stir without ice to combine. Water is added to account for some of the dilution normally achieved from stirring over ice.

Of course, this can also be done at your campsite. However, if you’d like to leave all bottles and glassware at home, do yourself a favor and prepare in advance.

Funnel the cocktail into your flask. That’s all there is to it! Your cocktail is ready to drink.

Since you’ve already added water, there’s no need for any further stirring. If possible, keep the flask in a nice cool place before drinking.

Sip straight from the flask or serve over a few pieces of ice if you require a bit more refreshment.
