Hitachino Nest Red Rice Ale

I wish I could say that I picked Hitachino Nest Beer out of a blind tasting lineup. Truthfully, however, it was the little red nest owl staring me down from across the beer aisle. I took a closer look and I was further intrigued after seeing the words, Red Rice Ale. I picked up a few bottles to take with me to our picnic, and it sure did hit the spot. Trust me, the Red Rice Ale from Hitachino Nest Beer is expressive in every way. I’m usually not a fan of malty beers, which it is, but this is different. This is complex, like no beer I’ve ever tasted. Bursts of bold ripe fruit combine with earthy, roasted, rice flavors, and very reminiscent of sake.

Todd, I think we share a common interest in all things ‘owl’ (between this and the owl’s brew). Hands down Hitachino is my go-to beer, with their hard to find XH being the most delicious thing since first sipping mexican coca cola.

So excited to see that this little treasure has been discovered by others. We are lucky to have it in the US though. When I lived in Japan, in literally ANY place that I went to that sold beer, I would ask if they had Hitachino. Bars, markets, restaurants, NO ONE that I met in Japan had ever heard of Hitachino. Such a shame and another reason to be proud to be American!

have you tried the hitachino nest white ale? it’s the perfect summer beer. amazing!!! still getting used to the new label design however 😉

Sarah Jane – haven’t tried it yet, but I have a bottle chilling in the fridge just waiting for the weekend. Can’t wait!!

Wings, a harmony wind.
Eyes, a moons’ cleft.
Voice, a crooning ochre.
Nest, a woven warmth.
Drink, a Hitachino.

Owl says: When you rest in the nest, red rice is best!

So does this mean it’s Gluten Free if it’s made from rice?

Lauren, it’s not gluten-free, as barley is still used in the brewing process.

I really like this bottle and label too! The owl on the cap is a cute touch. I tend to like beers on the lighter side, so this looks right up my alley. Thanks for the find

Well then, as I really like sake and regularly worship at the alter of beer, this sounds like a perfect marriage. I can’t wait to try some this long, holiday weekend. Thanks Todd!!
