The Perfect Fall Cheese Platter

October 6, 2014
Entertaining,Food + Drink

Los Angeles may be sweltering in 90 degree weather right now but October signals the beginning of the holiday season– the season of entertaining! To me a cheese platter is essential to any dinner party– it is great help when you’re already busy cooking dinner. But, your cheese spread does not have to be boring and, in fact, can be a shining centerpiece of your party.

I styled a bit of a different look with this cheese platter by placing clusters of ingredients on the board. I love the messy and crowded look.

Cheese and fruit

When it comes to the cheese, I usually stick to the classic rules of having a hard, soft, blue, and aged. This time I also added some ricotta which pairs so well with the figs and honey.

Start by placing the cheese in different corners of your board and then fill in the gaps with sliced figs, dates, cured meats, crackers, grapes, almonds, quince paste, and olives. Pick whatever ingredients that are in season and look delicious. I just place all the ingredients directly on the board and some other ingredients in small bowls.

Finally, one of my favorite things I love to add to a cheese platter is a chunk of honey comb. It’s unique and wonderful paired with nuttier cheese or even blue cheese.

May I make one request as a vegetarian? That you don’t put the cheese on top of a pile of meat?

Nonetheless, the posts are too quick for novices.
May you please prolong them a little from next time?
Thanks for the post.

I’m obsessed with cheese… Those pictures just made me so hungry and wild! It’s a bit weird but I love cheese shredded above some fresh tomatoes, covered in a light white sauce with greens and a bowl of hot brown rice made in my best rice cooker for cooking brown rice… It’s just madness, yo!)

it would be a great help if you could give us the names of the cheeses and hams used in that marvelous platter.

Here you will discover your self in the same scenario as above.

Oh wow. This is happening. Probably for dinner. I just wonder what the rest of my family is going to eat….I see this was posted over a year ago, but thanks for sharing!

Hello

my major is fashion design and i would like to use this image in one of my school project.
please email me if there’s any problem.
thankyou

How do you use the honeycomb? Do you slice into it with a knife and put it on your cheese and cracker?

The buffet style appetizer works so well! It addresses allergy and flavor issues and suggests new combinations. I like your array of fall tasties. I would add some fresh thyme too. Honey, fig, and thyme are great together! Local scuppernong grapes in our area. Lovely presentation!

Gorgeous presentation! Thanks for the tips on arranging. Can’t wait to do this myself.

I love your wooden cheese board! Can you tell me where you purchased it? It would be perfect for Thanksgiving. Thanks!

I actually got it at a store called Market Hall in Berkeley. I’m not sure what brand it is– sorry!

Great cheese plate, delicios additions and a lovely setting! yum yum yum!

This is lovely. My husband used to be a cheesemonger and we’re still expected to bring cheese plates to every holiday occasion. May I make one request as a vegetarian? That you don’t put the cheese on top of a pile of meat? It does have a lovely, messy look, but that would be really gross for those of us who don’t eat meat (or pork, etc.).

I would love to see miniature appetizers for a holiday party that I could prepare days ahead.

As an artist I love your creative photos of these cheese platters.

This is an absolutely fantastic assortment. My day job is as an artisan cheesemaker so this has a special place in my heart. And I love the honeycomb as a counterpoint to the cheese. We have a farmer here in Phoenix where I get honeycomb and it is just perfect.

Question on the honeycomb…do you use it or is it just used as a decoration? I love entertaining and this platter setting is definitely amazing.
Thank you for sharing.

That honey comb in the middle is a great idea and beautiful too!

I love cheeseboards – the honeycomb is such a great, cute idea!

There is only one thing I couldn’t live without: cheese! I would devour this!

Wow, that looks amazing! Where do you even buy honeycomb like that?? #eatmorecheese

I found the honeycomb at a specialty foods store close to me, but I’d bet your local farmer’s market sells some!

WOW. I love this “messy” look. I would like to eat this for dinner every night!

Every single image is gorgeous! Not to mention, all that cheesy is soooo enticing! Pinned! 🙂

I aspire to this level of cheese plate perfection! Seriously, I can do a messy cheese plate, but I’m still working on the artful part. It’s gorgeous and I imagine it tasted even better than it looked!

Love the romantic colors and the inviting arrangement of “broken bread” ingredients – inspiring and I’m definitely pulling this off at a party this weekend. I might add that your local cheese market gal/guy will be a wonderful help in choosing seasonal cheeses and pairings should you begin to look and get overwhelmed.

Adding in the honeycomb for my next cheese platter, great idea. Totally gorgeous photos!

LOVING the looks of this! And even though it may be super hot out there, here in the Midwest (Milwaukee to be exact) it is fall in full swing! Such a gorgeous cheese platter, I’ve been dying to make one, so I’m going to take some notes and have friends over 🙂

Perfection on a platter! Love the honeycomb additions, and those figs! I tried to find figs all weekend, but couldn’t! I think they are long gone on the east coast.

DANG is it always this hot in california in october???? you are perfectly welcome to come visit my freezing part of the world… i got cheese…. (but seriously, i’ll for sure be referring to this when constructing my massive cheese platter for my wedding!!!!)
