Homemade Bacon Salt

Are you tired of all the cookies this holiday season yet? Ya, me neither, but for those who don’t often have a hankering for sweets, this homemade bacon salt is the perfect gift! It is so easy to make, all you need is salt and bacon and a few spice jars to store the salt in. And if you’re wondering what you use bacon salt on, the possibilities are only limited by your swine-lovin’ imagination. I’d use bacon salt to season perfect runny eggs with, or sprinkled on homemade popcorn, or rimmed on edge of a glass of a really good Bloody Mary. OH. Yes.

Ingredients:

  • 12 ounces of bacon
  • 3/4 cup of sea salt
  • 1 teaspoon of freshly ground black pepper

Bacon salt 1Prepare your clean spice jars with some bakers twine and labels.

Bacon salt 2

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees and bake the bacon until it is very very crisp and cooked. This is the one time you want to overcook bacon. You could also do this in a pan or even in the microwave. Bake for about 30 minutes in the oven or until the bacon is very dark and crisp. Drain on paper towels and pat as much oil off the bacon as possible. Allow bacon to cool completely. Process bacon in a food processor until they turn into grainy bits.

Mix thoroughly with 3/4 cup of sea salt and add a teaspoon of freshly ground black pepper.

Pack into small jars.

Always taste your recipie before adding more to it so you know how you’ll like it very simple trick!

I have been searching for bacon salt in the stores and of course I couldn’t find it. I’ll be making this and use it to make bacon flavored sunflower seeds. I might try topping my Christmas fudge with a sprinkle of this.

Just made it and, while its good, next time I’ll cut the salt down to about half of what you indicated. I know it’s supposed to be bacon SALT but 3/4 cup of seasalt killed the flavor of the bacon almost entirely. (And Lou, it made me 2 small jars)

Hey, looks like you posted this 2 years ago so it might be strange me commenting on this,
but do you remember how much this makes?
If I just wanted to make it for one person and one jar, would I still use the same recipe?
Even if you don’t have an exact meaurement, how many jars is this?
Thanks, this is exactly what I have been looking for.

By the way, I was also wondering if you have any recipes for cooking lentils either in the crockpot or on the stove. Help me please because I have a lot of lentils but I don’t know how to cook them. Thank you again for your time.

I was wondering about the small jars that you used for your ‘Bacon Salt’. Who are the jars made by, what size are they and where do I find them? I would like to stock up on these little jars so that I can get better organized with my spices and other little things that I might find in my little apt. Thank you for your time and I hope to hearing from you soon.

I actually bought these on Amazon– there are a bunch of different sized glass jar containers!

This looks and sounds great! I have read the above comments. Can you please suggest more ways to use as would like to include this in my holidays hamper for friends. Thank you!

Sounds amazing, but salt is a preservative & absorbs moisture, and the fridge is moist… i would keep in a cool dark place…

I use to buy bacon salt .Did not realize it was fake bacon .I made this recipe OMG Orgasm of the taste buds lol.I used oak smoked sea salt very yummy !
I keep mine in the freezer just to be on the safe side

I think it would keep forever. Or east least a long time. Salt is a preservative.

Must. Make. This.

I think I’ll try it with jalapeno bacon 🙂 I wonder if you thoroughly dried out the bacon before you bottled it if it would last longer than a week and wouldn’t need to be refrigerated?

How many jars does this make? and what are the quantities of ingredients for just one jar?

Yum!! I would make some dark chocolate bark and sprinkle it with this! Chocolate, bacon and salt – it can’t get much better! Would also be good in chocolate chip cookies.

Wow! Such a great idea. A meat lover’s dream and a great Christmas gift idea.

Wishing You Happy Holidays!

Loving this!! I make a Bacon Bloody Mary, and this would be perfect for the rim! Also thinking it would be good sprinkled on a chocolate chip cookie. Sorry, I’m not sick of cookies just yet 😉

Ahhhhhhh what a delicious idea! Do you know how long this will keep for?

I’m not sure how long, but I imagine for at least a week or so in the fridge since it’s packed in salt.

Okay, this is insanely easy and sounds perfect! I can see tossing in some crushed red pepper flakes and/or cayenne to spice this up a bit as well. Woohoo!

This is so cool! I’m always adding some sweets to my christmas gifts, but this time, I’m definitely going to make this one. As I don’t have any vegetarian friend, they all will love it. Just one question…. where are this jars from?

They’re just spice jars I ordered on Amazon– I thought they were so cute!

Hold the phone! Bacon salt! I just want to sprinkle this on EVERYTHING
