Yum, We Love . . .

Roundups,Stories

I’ve officially hit the road, and over the last few days I’ve driven over 1,000 miles up the coast. As I write this I’m cozied up in a cafe in Seattle, coffee in hand. But as you read this I’m probably shivering in a tent on an island in the Pacific Northwest (please no rain). So, naturally, I’m browsing recipes for things I won’t be able to make on a single burner propane stove. Hey, it’s the thought that counts!!

  • Linda likes cupcakes, and cake. But I’ve always been a pie guy.
  • Who says you shouldn’t play with your food?
  • I’d have to taste it to believe it, but until then it’s another victory for science.
  • Try explaining what this is to anyone under 30.
  • This is too easy and too adorable not to try . . .

Have a wonderful weekend!!

P.S. – Any recommendations for food + drink in Vancouver would be greatly appreciated.

Are you already in Vancouver? Gosh, I’ve been a fan of this blog since you first launched. 🙂

I’m a food stylist and food photographer, so I make it my point to know all the amazing food places in Vancouver…

Some places to try, if you have not already:

– Le Marche St. George (my favourite cafe in the city)
– Burdock and Co. (just opened – Andrea Carlson’s dishes are a great representation of Vancouver’s locavore movement)
– Cartems Donuterie (my favourite doughnut place – much better than Lucky’s Doughnuts at 49th Parallel, in my opinion)
– Meat & Bread (yummy sandwiches – the name says it all)
– Beta 5 Chocolates (my favourite chocolate place in Vancouver)
– Bestie Wurst (I have not been – good sausages, apparently – it’s getting GREAT reviews)
– Wildebeest (have not been, but again, rave reviews 🙂 )
– The Diamond (I really love their cocktails here)
– Rainier Provisions (lunch spot)
– Nelson the Seagull (lunch and coffee spot)
– East Van Coffee Roasters (coffee)
– Revolver Coffee (coffee)
– various Farmers’ Markets – try making it to any one of these: Trout Lake Farmer’s Market (Saturday mornings) and Kitsilano Farmer’s Market (Sunday mornings) are my favourites. It’s the summer, so there are a few of these every week! Great for present-buying. 🙂
– Oyama Sausages on Granville Island. If you have access to a way to cook these babies, these are worth your while. Delicious.
– O5 Tea – the only rare tea bar in Canada. Well, North America. I used to develop cocktails for them – worth a trip if you’re down in Kits.
– Bao Bei (contemporary Chinese tapas. You would love it there – beautiful decor, too. Lots of material for a blog post. Also, ask for Guy Stowell if he’s working; he’s an amazing bartender – nice guy too. I’ve done some photos for him. Tell him Issha sent you. 🙂 )
– Legacy Liquor at the Olympic Village – if you’re looking for BC wine – here’s the place. You can also pick up Bittered Sling bitters there – the only Canadian bitters company headed by two lovely people (I do some photos for them too). 🙂 Since you do a lot of cocktail recipes in your blog, some of these bitters are worth picking up for your collection. My favourites? Denman bitters (evocative of Vancouver’s very diverse Denman Street), and their Shanghai Rhubarb bitters (seasonal – these sell out fast, so if you find them there, grab ’em)…

Gosh – well… I’m sure I am missing quite a bit in this list here, but I hope you get to at least experience a small smattering of these places while you are here. Enjoy your stay. 🙂

Okay, the card catalog as a liquor cabinet is nothing short of brilliant. Simply put, I want to find one and put it to use right away. The Dewey Decimal System never looked so good! Now, how to convince my wife….

I agree with Maia, Vij’s is an extraordinary experience. We’ve also recently added Bao Bei on Keefer as a must do for our Vancouver trips. If you have to wait for a table, the bar at the Keefer Hotel a few doors down is nice. Have fun in Vangroovy!

Funny enough another Maia!! I think Vij’s is a must for any foodie who loves Indian, not overrated at all. Hope for a wait so you can sit in the lounge and enjoy all the little free snacks that come around while you wait!!

Maya, Maia, Denise, and Sue: Thanks for the recommendations. I’ve been craving Indian food like crazy, so I think Vijs is a must. Went to Twisted Fork today for their Prime Rib dinner, which was tasty and not too pricey. I think Flying Pig for sure since it’s close to where I’m staying. Gonna try to book a reservation for La Quercia, but tomorrow is Canada Day, so I’m not quite sure what to expect as far as restaurants being open.

Eat at La Quercia! And go to Fisherman’s Terrace in Aberdeen Mall (Richmond) for dim sum. Vij’s is a bit overrated.
