Green Monster Bloody Mary

There’s no pretty way to say this . . . Grizzly got skunked. That’s right, late one night just before bed (of course), Grizzly stumbled upon a skunk out back behind the garage. He barked and went after it, only to bolt the other way in surprise after a hefty spray. Little known fact: skunks only have enough of their special scent for five or six different sprays. Hopefully that means this little guy or gal doesn’t come around my yard for a while. Anyway, while Audrey waited out back with Grizzly, I rushed off to the grocery store to grab the necessary washing supplies. Did I mention it was midnight? In contrary to popular opinion, bathing in tomato juice doesn’t help remove the skunk odor from the dog. Rather, a mixture of hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and dish soap does a remarkably good job.

Speaking of tomato-less, check out this green bloody mary!! Instead of going the tomato route, I went with tomatillos + some other green goodies for this outlandish brunch concoction. The result is a bright, vegetal, peppery blend that just begs for a little vodka. And of course, don’t forget the garnishes! I admit I went a little over-the-top, siding for a couple crispy carnitas tacos, elote, grilled shrimp, avocado, and even chicharrones. That skunk smell must have gotten to my head!

  2. Add ice to your glass, then add vodka, and top with the green monster mix (approx. 4-5 oz).

Hello, Hello, Hello!! First of all, WOW, I am soooo going to whip up several batches of this recipe for the Michigan / Ohio State game!! I have an overload of green tomatoes here in Northeast Ohio this year. Can you use green tomatoes in this recipe? Also, have you ever heard of anyone canning a green Bloody Mary mix? Usually, I stick to canning red Bloody Mary mix, but this year I had around 5000 red tomatoes, and as of now have 600 green ones. With the temps falling in the next week, I had to pick them. Thanks for your input if time allows you, and again, WOW on this recipe of yours!

This is practically genius! I’m mind blown at how many toppings you added to the top. So fun to eat and drink haha!!

Hi,

I’m emailing on behalf of Heat magazine in the UK. We’d love to use these images and possibly even the recipe in our magazine of your green monster bloody mary. Would this be possible? We could of course credit your website in the magazine too.

If you could please reply asap that would be great as we go to press very soon.

Thanks,
Nura

This is spectacular, and I love the photography. Now…if you don’t want to spend all of your time making this, feel free to order a bottle of Salty Iguana Green Bloody Mary mix. We make an incredible mix with tomatillos as the base and a love of southwestern flavors. Well done!

Oh my gosh – my dog killed a skunk this past year and it was the worst experience ever. 11:30 at night (of course) and I was upstairs brushing my teeth when it happened. So I had to run outside in my pajamas with my toothbrush hanging out of my mouth to try to diffuse the situation. Ugh. She was soaked with skunk juices. Gross. My dad have to come and help me out and we did that peroxide/soap/baking soda mix. Fingers crossed it never happens again! This drink – I could have used one of these after that incident. It’s blowing my mind!

OMG!!! That sounds terrible, Liz!! Skunks are the WORST! Grizzly still smells all these weeks later. Especially since it’s been raining, and the wet fur just rekindles that magical skunky smell 🙁

Thanks for stopping by, and so glad you liked the drink. Here’s to no more skunks!

I think you’ve officially won the internet. I’m turning 21 in three weeks, and this is officially what I want for my first drink!

Hahaha, thanks Kara. I’m gonna put that on my resume – “won the internet”. Happy birthday!!!

1. Bahaha – I can’t get over these garnishes. 2. I think if you show up to a party with these everyone will forgive the skunk smell lingering your jacket…

Hehe thanks Sarah. I was almost too full by the time I got to the drink!!

A bloody mary has never been my go to, and I don’t eat shrimp, but DAMN!!!!!! I would have to get down on this! This looks out of this world! This is probably the coolest most artistic and beautiful Bloody Mary I’ve ever seen or heard of. You guys are gonna break the food/drink internet w this – next level talent and the photos are fresh as always! Standing O.

You’re too sweet, Adam. Thank you!! I consider this more of a bloody mary garnish “inspiration”. Feel free to leave off the shrimp, or anything else that doesn’t suit your fancy. Just an idea of what you can get away with when it comes to the bloody mary 🙂 xoxo

i usually get blood marys for the garnishes…but you have outdone yourself with the green monster.so perfect for the spring!

Maz would love this! Whenever we see you guys next will you make him one? 😉

Thanks Chelsea! I didn’t know Maz is a bloody mary guy. I’ll certainly mix ya’ll up something when I see you. The question is, when is that gonna be?!?!! 😉

SERIOUSLY! That’s dinner and a drink. I just had this insane wish that you had a food truck that sold dinner-drink creations. It could be a thing right? Please make it a thing.

Ha – LOVE it, Megan!! Let’s start it up! I better come up with the rest of the menu 😛

this is GLORIOUS. And the garnishes are so on point. All this over soggy cold bacon strips and olives packed in water.

Ohmy I cannot believe those garnishes!! I’ve never seen something like this in my life, SO COOL!

This is all kind of amazing!! LOVE that you used tomatillos and I mean the tacos?! YESS.

Aww, thanks Tieghan 🙂 Aren’t tomatillos the best?! I used the leftovers for a big bowl of salsa verde. Woo hoo!

Holy guacamole (and all things un-holy, too!). This is outlandishly insane!! Must. Have. Now!!! (I’ve asked before, and I’ll keep asking, does HonestlyYum deliver? Maybe a drone delivery? If yes, I’ll take two, please!) 😀

Hahahaha, no drone deliver yet. But once we do, you’ll be the first to know. Thanks for stopping by as always, Homer. 🙂
