Garibaldi Cocktail

Back in college, a close friend gifted me a bottle of Campari he’d picked up while in Rome. At the time I wasn’t familiar with the beloved Italian bitter. Embarrassingly, in those days my knowledge of alcohol revolved around the beer pong table. My friend insisted this stuff was the real deal. “Everyone drinks it out there,” he exclaimed. I took a swig, and promptly spit it out into the sink. My inexperienced palette simply wasn’t ready for the complexity that Campari brought to the table. I put the bottle on top of the fridge where it sat for a whole . . . well, a few days. You didn’t think alcohol could actually last more than a week in a college apartment, did you?

After some thought, I decided to cut the bitterness with some fresh orange juice. Little did I know, I had accidentally stumbled upon a classic cocktail recipe, the Garibaldi. Indeed, the tartness of the orange juice was the perfect compliment to the bittersweet Campari. Before long, I was hooked. I’m a little obsessed with blood oranges, so naturally that’s what I’m juicing today. However, you’re more than welcome to use regular orange juice. Saluti!!

You’re killin me with the pour shots Todd. Dang. And now, given the ingredients in this recipe and the fact that I can’t drink it, I will share a story about a friend of mine (fellow Mormon, doesn’t drink) who once, trying to be cool at a business meeting where everyone was ordering cocktails, ordered a “virgin mimosa.” The waitress looked him in the eye and asked, “so you want orange juice?”

(I would add, YES, make that blood orange juice please.)

This looks amazing! Love blood orange and a new way to use Campari!

So colorful!! So tasty looking!! (Is it wrong that I’m craving one of these at 6:25am? … probably, but who cares?) 🙂

This is a gorgeous drink Todd! I love the vibrant colors and refreshing flavors!

I love Campari! I’ve only tried it with soda water and a sprig of orange peel so I need to try this. Thanks Todd!

This couldn’t have come at a better time. I need a serious DRANK, but I need it to be classy, or else I’m just an overworked, stressed-out mother hitting the sauce. But if there’s Campari in it, I’m a stylish Mama taking some time for herself.
Thanks for classing this place up!

Ha. Oh Campari. I remember being 12 or so and my parents were having Campari drinks with their friends at the end of a dinner party and the drink looked delicious (probably because it looked like red Tang) so I asked for a sip. My parents indulged me and I promptly declared it the most disgusting thing in the world. My parents then smiled and assured me this is what every alcoholic beverage ever tastes like.

Hahah, love the college story; sounds exactly like what I would have done! This sounds delicious though, will try it 🙂
