Vanilla Ice Cream with OIive Oil and Sea Salt

People are always surprised to hear that I love my vanilla ice cream with a drizzle of olive oil and a sprinkle of sea salt. And then when I insist they try it – I get great pleasure in knowing that I’ve convinced them that it is, indeed, a winning combination. The grassiness and fruitiness of extra virgin olive oil and the delicate brininess of the sea salt flakes brings out the flavor of the vanilla and adds a wonderful, rich subtleness to the ice cream. It’s simply divine and if you haven’t tried it . . . well, give it a try and let me know what you think!

It’s important to use the best ingredients here. Use your very best dipping olive oil, flakey salt and the best vanilla ice cream you can find.

Agree with most of the posters here. I’ve been doing this for years, decades even, and always get the same response when offering it to guests. “Eew, that’s weird,” etc. until they try it! I usually use crunchy salt, which adds some texture .

I actually had this a few months back but my go to is Vanilla Ice Cream with two tablespoons of the brine from jarred olives drizzled over it. So delicious.

I like your ice cream tips. I need to eat more ice cream. I’ll have to just buy a soft serve machine.

This is a delicious combo! I had it for the first time recently at a restaurant. They added fennel pollen. I swore I never wanted to eat ice cream any other way!! Thanks for the tips on how to do it at home!

I am an olive oil and sea salt fan and add them generously to everything. My mom makes cakes and cookies with them too . But frankly I’m not tempted by what u recommend. If there is an icecream made with olive oil please let me know. Thanx.

How did you discover this is my only question?
ITS AMAZING WITH PINK HIMALAYAN SALT TOO

It is so crazy that I found this post since this is literally one of my favorite desserts. Most of my friends think i’m nuts when I tell them about it and they won’t even try it. It’s exactly as you say, except I usually use a tangerine-infused olive oil. I call it a homemade creamsicle!

This is so intriguing! Would love recommendations on ice cream and olive oil to try… Thanks!

I love this so much, I am literally eating it as I type, no joke. This is good stuff… I have been doing this for a while since my older sister told me about it, just thought I’d check online to see if anyone else does. Thanks!

Do you think this would be good even if I don’t like olives? I might test it this weekend

This is an amazing idea and fabulous recipe! You should try it with one of our flavored infused olive oils like Meyer Lemon. We are even in the works on a Blood Orange that would be a fantastic combination. All of our Artisan Olive Oils are made from CA grown olives and make for a perfect gourmet gift. Check us out at http://www.lunaolivo.com/. We are a truly unique company looking for unique recipes that our gourmet products would pair perfectly with. Again, great recipe, we can’t wait to try it ourselves!

wow what a strange combination, how did you stumble upon it? lol. I am certainly curious though! lol.

I never comment on anything, but I had to stop by and say that this is just GENIUS! Thank you for this 🙂

These are some of my favorite things! I just never thought to put them together! This will be dessert tomorrow night!
I’m so glad I found this on Pinterest. Now I can continue browsing the rest of your site too! Thanks for sharing your ideas and recipes!

I love vanilla ice cream, and now I think I’m in heaven. Thank you for sharing! I’ll probably never eat plain vanilla ice cream again!

Thank YOU for stopping by!! Btw…it’s delicious on frozen yogurt as well. 😉

This is the best way to eat ice cream in my opinion! I had one with lemon olive oil and it was extremely delicious.

Whoa, I hadn’t even thought of flavored olive oils. I’ll have to let Erica know. Thank you Alexis!!

This was AMAZING! I made it last night as a lazy dessert after a BBQ and it was so incredibly delicious!

This would be killer with chocolate ice cream too! Drooling!

Honestly, I’ve only tried it with vanilla. I don’t see why chocolate wouldn’t work as well. Thanks Mallory!

Well, this is the most unique combination yet, but I must try it. I will let you know.

Have tried this before and it is indeed lovely. The bf always puts tapatio in his PB&J’s and tries to convince people its the best way to have them. Can’t say its as universally pleasing as your suggestion but surprisingly he does have a few converts…

Wowowow!! That sounds so bizarre!! Mark my words, I WILL give it a try. I’ll keep you updated, J.S.

wow olive oil?? definitely something i need to try!

this combo is insane!!! i cannot wait to try this out. i love a good sweet-salty dessert!

This is so beautiful! I’ve never tried the oil and salt trick, but now I’m so intrigued I just know we’ll be giving it a go before the week is through. And those golden spoons… swoon!

Thank you Ashley!! Definitely give it a try. It’s surprisingly pretty mellow.

I have had this……..interesting combination. I must say that you better have great olive oil and wonderful sea salt for this to work.

I always enjoyed the sundae at MCD with one or the other french fry so I can absolutely imagine this working!

I am so intrigued by this combination, simple yet sophisticated!!!!
I am loving this post VERY VERY MUCH. Thank you so much for sharing this lovely idea.
And I am loving your gorgeous photos, too 🙂

Thanks for checking out the post, Pang. That’s so nice of you to say!! Hope you give it a try.

OMG – OK this is amazingly brilliant. I need to try this ASAP now.

Thanks Beth!! It’s definitely worth a try. It’s really great on vanilla frozen yogurt as well.

Mind blown! I really want to try this immediately!

Lemme know if you try it Christina. Erica loves her vanilla ice cream like this. I hadn’t tried it until about a week ago, and I was thoroughly impressed.
